I get why people are upset but I think it was pretty clear we weren't ever really going to get an ending that would satisfy everyone just by the slow pace this manga was. Heart wrenching yet satisfying conclusion of the fight.Īaah, I've been meaning to post those for quite some time. Ippo vs Sendou 2nd time at Lollapalooza event.Against that experienced veteran boxer/old guy who likes to clinch.Ippo's getting hit, and hit, and hit, and hit, and hit, and hit, and hit, and hit, and hit, and. The worst & dragged out too long of a match/story chapters, almost make me gave-up this manga. Against Geddo/Geddoe/whoever he is, the bald-headed Filipino boxer who likes to gamble. Will George Morikawa even gonna able to finished this title, ever, before anything bad happens? (example: the author suddenly died, the earth exploded, Armageddon happened, etc) It's emotional, jaw-dropping, and unexpected. Well, I just read it up until chapter 1202.

If the series changed focus from Ippo to other characters I'd be more than happy, the rest ensemble is far more interesting than Ippo, letting him take a support role would be a big improvement to the series quality. With that said, this is still a more interesting this to have happened to Ippo since he won the Japanese title, and I prefer it to seeing Ippo aimlessly fight another 10 fights as he was doing up to this point. Had he fought Miyata before aiming at the world, only for him to realise his heart wasn't there and stepping down after two losses, I wouldn't be particularly annoyed at this turn of events. Ippo hasn't had the "hunger" for the world title in a long time, I'd argue that he never had, his motivation were always about seeing how far he could go as well as to face Miyata. And as a result of that, none of the many hooks of the series were ever reached. Ippo has been stagnated as a character for a good 500 chapters and he could had used some dramatic change, the issue with this turn of events is that the series has been stretching itself thin for the last 10-15 years, with good moments far and in between. I will say that as much sense as it makes thematically to have a loss after a loss in the boxing world, pacing wise it has been like hundreds of chapters since anyone really truly got their shit stuffed in by one of the protagonists and even if we time skip or switch perspective to takamura or itagaki or ippo's son or ippo's miraculous brain surgery or whatever, i need in my life another 2 page spread of someone getting punched so hard they flip all the way upside down like they charlie brown missing a football kick. It's only about learning 'what it means to be strong' and taking the titular 'first step' towards that. I never even really expected Ippo to be world champion by the end, because the story was never about becoming world champion. Brain damage is a super real threat to boxers and the way the characters talk about it, it feels like the series' real antagonist, even beyond Martinez who i always assumed might not even still be champion by the time Ippo got his shot at the title. I don't think the manga is over by any means, but I now have no idea what direction it will take or how it will end.
